Powhatan’s familiarity with Native history is evident in this artwork. The image of the powerful Powhatan leader, Wahunsenacawh, the primary Native leader in the region at the time of the English settlement at Jamestown is juxtaposed with thousands of years of indigenous historical references. This work serves as a reminder that despite policies of forced removal and cultural assimilation Native people are indeed still part of the history and landscape of the United States.
