Raw Motion: DIY Animation Workshop

Learn the fundamentals of animation using easily accessible tools: your smartphone, a simple animation app and basic drawing materials. Participants will learn how to create a short animation from scratch, focusing on essential principles of animation and hands-on practice.

This workshop is designed for ages 18+. All skill/experience levels welcome.
Participants should bring their own mobile phones and be prepared to download a simple, free animation app. All other materials will be provided.
Workshop fee: Muscarelle Members, W&M Staff, Faculty, and Students $25; Non-Members $30
INSTRUCTOR:
Brendan Reed is a multifaceted artist and creative director whose work spans animation, sound, and video art. Brendan has been a key collaborator with renowned bands such as Les Angles Morts, Arcade Fire, and Clues, contributing as a composer, performer, and artist. His diverse career includes collaborations with Constellation Records, Suoni Per Il Popolo, Fondation Riopelle, and artists like Colin Stetson, Rebecca Foon, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Vic Chesnutt.
Reed’s work is rooted in both narrative and experimentation across various media, developing rich, raw, and evocative works. His animation, sound, and interface work have been featured in exhibitions at the Muscarelle Museum, including Rising: The American Indian Movement and the Third Space of Sovereignty, Hiroshige’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, and Building the Brafferton: The Founding, Funding, and Legacy of America’s Indian School.
As an instructor, Brendan brings extensive experience and a collaborative spirit to his animation workshops. He encourages improvisation, chaos, and open experimentation, helping students test creative boundaries. Brendan is dedicated to cultivating an unfiltered creative space for expression, exploration, and community.
