PORTRAIT OF LOVE: Art Date Night
Tired of watching the same old movies on TV? Want to spice up your evening with something fun and unique? Share a glass of wine or sparkling cider and join Artist Steve Prince as he guides couples in making a drawing of their spouse, partner, or child. With basic materials the instructor will guide students on an artistic journey to making a beautiful portrait in charcoal and creating memories that will last a lifetime! Sarah Balascio, a registered board certified art therapist and adjunct lecturer at William & Mary’s McLeod Tyler Wellness Center, will lead three virtual workshops to help participants explore feelings and work on relaxation. The focus will be on expressing ourselves through the arts in a supportive and mindful environment. All are welcome to attend and no experience is necessary – just a willingness to experiment! Participants will need paper and anything to color with- markers, colored pencils, pens, watercolor.

Join Steve Prince in this hands-on workshop, where participants will be exposed to the limitless process of creating watercolor monoprints! Participants will create expressive watercolor templates on Yupo paper, cut and arrange the dried color materials on an acrylic substrate, and utilize water-saturated archival paper to reconstitute the watercolors to create unique, multicolored prints that are abstract or representational.

Copying With Confidence
- Related Exhibition: EDGAR DEGAS: The Private Impressionist
Artists through the ages have copied works of the masters to improve their own techniques, methods and compositions. Participants in this class will select a work of art that inspires and interests them from our special exhibition Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist. All levels will improve their drawing through close observation and individualized instruction using provided sketchbooks and graphite pencils.

Period Portraits

Connect to the past through guided instruction on the techniques and challenges of costumed figure drawing. Participants will be inspired by works by Degas and his contemporaries in the galleries and move to close observation of live models in period dress seated in the gallery. Open to all levels, this workshop will focus on graphite portrait drawing with materials included.

Dancing with Degas

Join us for a graphite drawing class in celebration of Degas and the art of dance. Participants will learn to capture dynamic moves of live dancers in the gallery through basic drawing instruction. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist looking to improve your drawing skills, this workshop caters to all levels and all materials will be provided.
