AMERICA IN BLACK AND WHITE: DEPRESSION-ERA PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE FARM SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

The Muscarelle Museum of Art presents a selection of photographs from the Farm Security Administration, a New Deal-era project that created a pictorial record of American life between 1935-1944 and launched the careers of American photographers such as Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks. The Williamsburg Regional Library Gallery at the Stryker Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Docent-led tours of the exhibition will be available Wednesdays from 2-4 PM and Fridays from 10 AM to noon. Other tours provided by request.

Looking Inward: Portraiture in the Premodern Mediterranean World

Join us for our spring faculty lecture featuring Cristina Stancioiu, Associate Professor of Art History at William & Mary. Within its complex Byzantine and Venetian imperial experience, the Greek island of Crete displays a mixture of medieval and early modern cultural elements. This talk explores portraiture to redefine artistic production and the nature of the artist negotiating medieval orthodoxy and modern humanism when working in marginal, contact zones throughout the eastern Mediterranean region. Botanical Cyanotypes Workshop

This Earth Day, we are Inspired by the work of the first female photographer Anna Atkins, who created photograms to document plants’ botanical importance and aesthetic qualities. Students will create their own botanical photographs using the same process. Together, we will explore the local ecosystem, collect samples, and photograph them utilizing the sun.
