As a memorial communal art project, the Student Assembly has partnered with The Lemon Project: A Journey of Reconciliation, whose research has uncovered over 180 people enslaved by William & Mary from 1693 through the Civil War. Of those people, forty-plus names were shared with William & Mary students, faculty, and staff to be honored through art.  As stated on their website: “The Lemon Project is named for Lemon, a man who was once enslaved by William & Mary.  We cannot know the full dimensions of Lemon’s life or his relationship with W&M.  In many ways, Lemon stands in the place of the known and unknown African Americans who helped to build, maintain, and move the university forward.”  In this spirit, we display these paintings made by members of our William & Mary community to honor the sacrifices of the many souls that the university enslaved for its progress.  Every time we step through campus, may we always remember that we owe our current success to them.
