Forever Marked by a Day
Forever Marked by the Day pays homage to those architects, artists, designers, and photographers who made creativity triumph over destruction.
The Making of THE HUMAN FRAME
Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000) first gained notoriety through printmaking, a practice he maintained throughout his career – though many know him now as a sculptor.
PHOTOMANIA
The exhibition grows out of a class for freshmen, Photomania, that introduces new William & Mary students to photography and to undergraduate-level study in the liberal arts by combining readings and lectures in the history and theory of photography with hands-on demonstrations and original work in contemporary and historical photographic techniques.
The Making of THE ART OF WELL-BEING
The exhibition has five sections—individual; kin; community; natural world; and art making. Individually and in groups, the paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and other media shown here express the needs, pleasures, desires, and aspirations of individuals, communities, and the wider world.
SCALES OF CHAOS
This exhibition approaches the theme of “scale” from the unconventional perspective of Chaos Theory, presenting new ways of reading art, and a selection of abstract and figurative works of art that embody sensible intuitions of complexity.
In Focus
The Museum strives to build the collection in meaningful and strategic ways, including a commitment to inclusivity and representation. It became apparent during a survey of the greater collection that photography remains an under-represented media in the Museum’s overall holdings.
AMERICAN VISION
In this exhibition of American paintings, the Muscarelle Museum of Art honors a longtime supporter and friend, Carroll Owens, Jr., who passed away in Alexandria on October 12, 2019. Carroll was a 1962 graduate of William & Mary, where he was a member of both the football and tennis teams.
The Making of Objects of Ceremony
This exhibition explores ceremony as a vital creative impulse expressed in remarkably diverse ways that reflect the emotional power of objects.
Women With Vision
In the spring of 2018, the Muscarelle Museum of Art presented Women with Vision, a milestone exhibition in anticipation of the 100-year anniversary of the first women students admitted to the College of William & Mary.
Hark Upon a History
Hark Upon a History: The 1929 Journey to England, curated by Sydney Stewart, ’16 and Michaela Wright, ’16, is a companion exhibition to Building the Brafferton: The Founding, Funding and Legacy of America’s Indian School.
Building on the Legacy
VIRTUAL MUSCARELLE is proud to present Building on the Legacy: African American Art from the Permanent Collection comprised of paintings, drawings, and sculptures by renowned artists.
Rising
Anthropology students enrolled in Native American Sovereignty, a spring 2020 senior seminar with Dr. Danielle Moretti-Langholtz, researched the rise of AIM in photographs and historical documents as well as curated an exhibition. The exhibition highlights some of the central events associated with AIM, such as the takeover of Alcatraz, Wounded Knee 2 and the Trail of Broken Treaties.
