Artist Lecture: Morgan Bulkeley
Thursday, September 18, 2025
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Lecture
Join us for an evening celebrating Where Late the Sweet Birds, a new exhibition presented jointly by the Department of Art & Art History and the Muscarelle.
Where Late the Sweet Birds represents selected works from Morgan Bulkeley’s expansive creative output across five decades. Bulkeley’s eclectic realm of symbolism is concerned with the ecological crisis of our time, which has remained at the center of his practice since the early 1970s.
Bulkeley states that he endeavors to make works that are “beautiful, frightening and funny, all at once” in an effort to “make people think of the fragility in which we exist.”
Where Late the Sweet Birds marks Bulkeley’s first solo exhibition outside of his home state of Massachusetts. The exhibition arrives at William & Mary during the Year of the Environment, a year-long celebration of our shared commitment to protecting our planet and the communities that depend on its health and resilience.
A lecture by the artist at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at 4:00 PM will be followed by a reception in Andrews Gallery until 7:00 PM. No registration necessary.
Where Late the Sweet Birds runs from August 27 until November 14, 2025 and is curated by Patrick Harkin, Director of the Andrews Gallery.
