Introducing Abstract Expressionism: An American Movement
Tuesday, February 10, 2026
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Lecture
As the U.S. worked its way through the Great Depression, an artistic energy developed in New York, with artists moving away from representational art and focusing their efforts on new approaches to abstraction. In this lecture, Muscarelle Museum of Art Director David Brashear will provide an overview of the players who changed the world of modern art and moved its international locus from Paris to New York.
This is the second event in our spring Muscarelle Explorations series, focusing on the artists highlighted in the special exhibition Abstract Expressionists: The Women — the remarkable and, until recently, under-appreciated women who shaped one of America’s great art movements.
Abstract Expressionists: The Women features nearly 50 works by 32 women artists and is on view at the Muscarelle January 23 – April 26 as its only East Coast showing. The exhibition was organized by the American Federation of Arts from the Christian Levett Collection and the Female Artists of the Mougins Museum (FAMM) in Mougins, France.
This talk will take place in the Event Hall at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. Free and open to all. Registration is encouraged but not required.
