Radical Softness: A Talk by Janet Echelman

Radical Softness: A Talk by Janet Echelman

Friday, October 3, 2025
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Lecture

Janet Echelman sculpts at the scale of buildings and city blocks. Her works, exhibited across five continents, transform public spaces — inviting reflection and awe as they move with the wind. She weaves ancient craft and modern technologies into an utterly unique art form. In this talk, Echelman will describe her practice and her ongoing commitment to “Taking Imagination Seriously,” the title of her TED Talk which has been translated into thirty-five languages and has more than two million views.

She will also introduce Radical Softness: The Responsive Art of Janet Echelman, a visual compendium of her oeuvre just published this month, which offers detailed project documentation, archival source materials and a fascinating illustrated chronology. A book-signing will follow the talk; books will be for sale in the Museum Store.

Don’t miss NOLI TIMERE, a soaring aerial performance featuring a custom-designed, voluminous Echelman net scuplture, being performed at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on October 4.
