Lecture
What does it mean for a sculpture to think? James Sullivan will discuss his work in sculpture, drawing and photography exploring how materiality shapes the sensations that form evokes.
Curated by William & Mary Professor of Art Elizabeth Mead, the exhibition Thinking Sculpture | Sculpture Thinking, on view at the Muscarelle Museum of Art February 28 through June 14, 2026, features sculpture, drawings and prints by James Sullivan. The exhibition serves as the laboratory portion for the William & Mary class Neuroaesthetics: The Artist and the Mind, taught by Mead and Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences Jennifer Stevens. This interdisciplinary class unites art and science and will use the works in the exhibition to examine the roles of creativity and cognition.
This lecture will take place in Andrews Hall 101. Andrews Hall is located directly behind Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, next door to the Muscarelle.
