Visions of the West utilizes coursework produced by William & Mary students in the required practicum course for Art History majors, The Curatorial Project (ARTH 331), taught by Assistant Professor Alyssa Quintanilla. Drawing on works from the Muscarelle Museum of Art and the Special Collections Research Center, the exhibition features maps, photographs, sketches and paintings that examine the West as both a geographic region and a cultural construct. Through these images and objects, visitors are invited to consider how representations of the West have shaped understandings of nature, place, indigeneity and identity across the Americas, and how these enduring visions continue to influence the cultural imagination.
