Museum Trip: Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art

April 20, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

‣ Register

This spring, visit some of the most exciting exhibitions coming to the region’s best museums, and leave the planning to us. On Thursday, April 20, we’ll travel to the VA MOCA in Virginia Beach to see the newly opened exhibition Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick. Featuring more than 80 works from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer, the exhibition offers a broad overview of Walker’s career.

“A leading artist of her generation, Kara Walker (b. 1969) works in a range of mediums, including prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture, film, and the large-scale silhouette cutouts for which she is perhaps most recognized. Her powerful and provocative images employ contradictions to critique the painful legacies of slavery, sexism, violence, imperialism, and other power structures, including those in the history and hierarchies of art and contemporary culture.”

We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Kara Walker exhibition led by educators from the VA MOCA, then have enough time to view the rest of the museum before returning to Williamsburg.

Date: April 20, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Location: The bus will depart from the W&M School of Education Parking Lots 1 and 2. Registered participants will receive a parking pass by email — please contact museum@wm.edu with any questions.

Fee: Muscarelle members, W&M faculty, staff and students: $15; Non-members: $25
