Building Connection Through Commemoration: A Lecture by Michael Arad

Michael Arad, a partner at Handel Architects, designed and realized Reflecting Absence, which was selected from more than 5,000 entries submitted in an international competition for the National September Memorial at the World Trade Center site. He also designed the Emanuel Nine Memorial, commemorating the victims and survivors of the 2015 shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina. In this talk, Arad will discuss how architecture can help communities process grief and build shared meaning.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Forever Marked By The Day: A Quarter Century of Mourning and Renewal, our fall Muscarelle Explorations series will examine the architecture of the World Trade Center site — past, present and future — while exploring broader themes of resilience and connectivity.

Forever Marked By The Day: A Quarter Century of Mourning and Renewal explores the history of the World Trade Center through an architectural perspective. This exhibition acknowledges the profound loss and impact of the events of 2001 and invites visitors to reflect on its meaning to our nation and its enduring impact on our culture, our cities and our collective memory.
