Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael: Designing the Italian Renaissance
September 10, 2027 — December 5, 2027
Muscarelle Museum of Art
Featuring nearly 30 original Renaissance drawings alongside paintings, medals, architectural models, and large-scale reconstructions, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael: Designing the Italian Renaissance examines how architecture was conceived, developed and realized during one of the most transformative periods in Western history.
Curated by Adriano Marinazzo, the exhibition brings together exceptional works from major international collections, including the Louvre, the Uffizi Galleries and Casa Buonarroti. An important collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro in the Vatican centers on the first comprehensive digital survey of Michelangelo’s original model for the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, providing new insight into its structure and construction and supporting the creation of a large-scale reconstruction for the exhibition.
Rarely exhibited drawings and works shown publicly or in the United States for the first time trace the evolution of Renaissance architecture from its foundations in Florence to its monumental expression in Rome and St. Peter’s Basilica.
