Exhibition:  1619 / 2019 | Exhibition Dates:  November 6, 2019 – January 12, 2020

Williamsburg, Va. (October 23,  2019) – Works of art in a variety of media and techniques, including weaving, quilting, cast iron, mosaic, painting, graphite, photography and prints, will be featured in the exhibition 1619 / 2019 organized by the Muscarelle Museum of Art for the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first documented Africans in Colonial Virginia.  The Muscarelle exhibition, opening November 6, will feature works by emerging and established African American and Native American artists that address the complex experience of slavery and forced migration.  The evocative power of art can serve as a liberating exercise in dealing with the challenging subject matter, such as slavery and forced migration.

Artists from across the country were invited to submit new works, or works from their personal collections, in response to the 1619 / 2019 theme of the exhibition.  Participating artists include Sonya Clark, Nell Painter, Katrina Andry, Sedrick Huckaby, Preston Jackson, Delita Martin, Jerushia Graham, Letitia Huckaby, Richard Ward, Elmer Yazzie, Steve Prince, Dayon Royster, Kimberly Dummons, Bear Allison and Donald Wilson.

Works from the Museum’s permanent collection will augment the exhibition and will include such artists as Charlie Pratt, Rose Powhatan, Bunky Echo-Hawk, and Willie Cole among others.  Recently acquired works from Cara Romero and Danny Simmons along with original poems by Hermine Pinson, William & Mary Professor of English & Africana Studies, offer additional opportunities for reflection on the powerful subject matter of this exhibition on view through January 12, 2020.

Muscarelle Museum of Art Interim Director David Brashear stated, “The works in this exhibition communicate a complexity of experience, addressing the past and present. We are fortunate to have such powerful works for our visitors to experience and reflect upon.”  Danielle Moretti-Langholtz, Curator of Native American Art, added, “Including art produced by Native Americans in this exhibition reminds us that 1619 had a major impact on the indigenous peoples who had been living in North America for thousands of years.  The forced migration of Africans to Virginia is not just a story about African and European settlers.  It’s about the disruption of the societies and lifeways of the original inhabitants of the continent.”

The exhibition will also include The Links Steamroller Print – a yearlong art project led by Muscarelle Director of Engagement Steve Prince.  Prince engaged people from various cultures and age groups to create small woodblocks that will be inserted into a large-scale, puzzle-like matrix to “link” the individuals.  The culmination of this project is the act of printing with an industrial steamroller. Visitors can witness the live creation of this monumental print on Thursday, November 7, between noon and 1:00 PM on the south yard of the Wren Building on the campus of William & Mary.  The print will then be on view in the 1619 / 2019 exhibition beginning November 8, 2019.

Welcome to our new Director of Engagement and Distinguished Artist in Residence, Steve A. Prince

The Director of Engagement is responsible for the development, planning, managing and representation of the outreach and educational programs of the Museum working collaboratively with various departments of the College, students and greater community. In his role as Distinguished Artist in Residence he will facilitate the creation and formation of a publishing atelier studio to produce limited editions of fine art prints by visiting artists.

 

Prince is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his BFA from Xavier University of Louisiana and his MFA in Printmaking and Sculpture from Michigan State University and has shown his art internationally in various solo, group, and juried exhibitions. Prince received several honors for his art and scholarship including the 2010 Teacher of the Year for the City of Hampton and has participated in several residencies including the 2007 Partners of the Americas Artist in Residence in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Prince has lectured and conducted workshops in both secular and sacred settings internationally in a variety of media. Many of his hands-on workshops and community-based projects have culminated in the creation of permanent communal based artworks. Among his public works is an 8′ x 8′ mixed media work entitled Lemonade: A Picture of America created in 2017 to commemorate the first three African American students in residence at William & Mary. He spreads a message of hope and renewal to the global community through the cathartic funerary tradition from New Orleans called the Dirge and Second Line operating under the credo, “your imagination is your only limitation.”

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane opens at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts

The 2013 blockbuster exhibition at the Muscarelle Museum, Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti, has returned to the United States for two encore presentations at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee and the Phoenix Art Museum.  Curated by Dr. John T. Spike, the exhibition consists of twenty-six drawings by the Renaissance master and represents another remarkable collaboration between the Casa Buonarroti, the Muscarelle Museum of Art and the Associazione Culturale Metamorfosi in Rome.

As curated by Dr. Spike, the exhibition highlights a range of works, from rough sketches to presentation drawings produced over a span of 60 years drawn from the unparalleled collection of the Casa Buonarroti, Michelangelo’s ancestral home in Florence, Italy.   The unifying theme is the age-old contrast of the sacred and profane as understood by Michelangelo.  In this second edition, Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane offers two beautiful drawings not seen in the 2013 exhibition, including a profile study of a young man’s face and an anatomical study of the torso of Christ.

Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane will remain on view at the Frist until January 6, 2016.  The exhibition was brought to the Frist to celebrate the Center’s fifteenth anniversary.  After closing at the Frist, the exhibition will continue to the Phoenix Art Museum where it will be on view from January 17, 2016 until March 27, 2016.

The Muscarelle has published a Second Edition of its catalogue, Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, to accompany this exhibition. The Second Edition features additional essays by Dr. John T. Spike as well as other key contributors.

We are proud to announce that the Decoding Da Vinci app which allowed visitors to flip through an interactive Codex on the Flight of Birds during Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty has received an honorable mention award in the Applications category of the inaugural SEMC Technology Competition.

The SEMC Technology Competition began this year to recognize and reward excellence in the use of technology by southeastern museums. The competition encourages innovation, effective design, accessibility, creativity and pride of work, and recognition of institutional identity.

The Art Newspaper [May 2015]:  When “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty” opens at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston on 15 April, it will justifiably attract enormous public and critical attention. It features 15 drawings by Leonardo and his followers, borrowed fr om the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, as well as the Codex on the Flight of Birds, around 1505, from the same institution; seven Leonardo drawings from the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence; and eight drawings by Michelangelo from the Casa Buonarroti in the Tuscan capital.

It is not surprising to see such an important show at the Boston museum, one of the world’s great encyclopedic collections. But the institution behind the show and its first venue, the Muscarelle Museum of Art, part of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, though renowned and respected in the museum community, is far less widely celebrated. Yet with this and two previous shows of Italian art which traveled to Boston, on Michelangelo and Caravaggio, the Muscarelle has made a name for itself as an organizer of eye-catching, scholarly shows and for managing to secure loans of some of the world’s great art objects.
